Five Things EP17: American Red Cross of Eastern NC with Joshua Cain https://brandascentmedia.com/?page_id=1190 00:02 [Music] 00:06 the truth is adding value will never go 00:08 out of style 00:12 hello and thanks for joining us for 00:14 another five things podcast we've got a 00:16 great group of guys here today we're 00:18 going to talk a little bit about 00:19 everything but ultimately we've got Adam 00:21 Saad from rush hour carding owner of 00:25 that location where's it end garner clay 00:29 okay okay and I know is on the border 00:33 there and we've got old friend of the 00:35 the podcast here Scot rudder dropping in 00:38 again and showing off some of his gear 00:41 and then we've got Josh Cain from the 00:43 American Red Cross and thanks for 00:46 joining us fellows we're going to jump 00:48 over a few different topics today a 00:50 little bit different first time we've 00:52 ever had three people on a podcast so 00:54 this kind of cool got Moustafa all 00:56 stressed out so we're excited to do this 00:59 today and ultimately we've got a very 01:02 successful business owner well I guess 01:04 we'll start off dealing with that and 01:06 tell people a little bit about how you 01:08 ended up getting into business for 01:10 yourself and why that field and and sure 01:18 it's a process right together sure okay 01:33 and we're not holding that against you 01:37 okay there you go 01:39 you just made a lot of friends right but 01:42 we noticed that there's me and my 01:48 brother and my cousins were the starters 01:49 of it there was a big buzz going around 01:51 the corporate world about team building 01:53 and you know us being an RTP area with 01:56 all these big companies starting to come 01:58 out there to retain good employees team 02:00 building company outings was so huge so 02:03 we wanted something to really that was 02:06 unique and different to do to be able to 02:10 do that sure being in North Carolina 02:11 we're racing country we have these big 02:14 companies here and we got the three big 02:16 universities you know state dick 02:17 Carolina right and 02:19 a seahorse but so 2004 we bought land 02:24 2005 we built the building it opened up 02:27 and almost 20 almost 15 years later 02:31 we're still here I'll tell you what 02:32 that's a success in itself you know 50% 02:35 of the businesses fail in the first two 02:36 years you know and it's staggering the 02:39 numbers that when you look over the 02:41 course of a decade businesses that 02:43 actually survive that long it's it's a 02:45 small number it's interesting you said 02:47 that because on our second year was with 02:49 the economy plummeted wealthy worse you 02:51 know prescient we have ever had right 02:55 [Music] 02:56 and we were able to cut back a lot of 03:02 stuff you know I got I fired the grass 03:05 cutter I fired the maid I fired 03:06 everybody we just let the staff do 03:08 everything ourselves you know we cut 03:10 back as much cost as we could we saved 03:12 everything and two years later we we our 03:17 business back into the back into the 03:19 block and we haven't seen red and you 03:24 know it's scary when you're going 03:25 through that because you know ultimately 03:27 it's a you got to take care of the 03:29 company first and you know Scott was mad 03:32 when you you cut him from cutting the 03:34 grass he was definitely mad at you for a 03:35 while but as he grew up in matured he 03:38 understood yeah understood you know you 03:42 had to do what you had to do but you 03:45 know so ultimately a good principles 03:48 this is that you identified a need and 03:51 then you came up with a good strategy 03:52 you knew your market you were catering 03:54 to people hey this is racing country 03:56 there's a big need out there and I can 03:59 tell you this from being there several 04:00 times you guys did it right I mean it's 04:02 really nice facility yeah definitely 04:04 nice facilities super fun so if you're 04:06 watching this and you want to build some 04:09 camaraderie with your your co-workers or 04:11 employees or team rush hour carting is 04:14 definitely a great way to do it and let 04:16 me ask you this real quick what's the if 04:18 you had to give advice to someone 04:20 thinking about starting a company what 04:23 is the number one thing that you would 04:24 would tell them and I know there's a lot 04:27 okay 04:28 the absolute biggest thing is you have 04:30 got to constantly reinvent yourself as 04:33 soon as you become complacent and say oh 04:34 I've made it you're gonna die because 04:36 somebody's gonna come and take your 04:38 lunch away and open up something better 04:39 than you we have constantly changed we 04:42 recently had ax throwing and you gotta 04:45 invest you gotta figure out what are the 04:47 customers want what is their meat one of 04:49 the reasons we had ax throwing first of 04:51 all it's become a big buzz country but 04:53 it's also become a long wait to race and 04:55 it gets people frustrated now they can 04:57 throw axes while waiting we added some 04:59 racing simulators actual real racing 05:01 simulators they can play on a lot of our 05:04 businesses coming from RTP they're 05:07 gardeners got a very bad stereotype of 05:10 being first of all we are the country 05:14 bumpkin of the triangle number one 05:17 number two we are so far away from RTP 05:19 and morsel okay and none of those are 05:21 true so to overcome that I bought a nice 05:25 luxury corporate bus I'm talking about 05:27 leather seats hardwood floors phone 05:30 charger on every aisle TVs everywhere 05:32 holds 34 people I will go to RTP 05:37 pick up the people taking rush hour that 05:39 way they can also drink don't worry 05:41 about drive back and driving back well 05:42 that's nice compensated by a bad 05:44 location I didn't realize it you lived 05:46 on by a bus so you have to constantly 05:49 reinvent yourself figure out what's 05:51 working what's not working does not work 05:53 in digit if it is working expand on it 05:56 look at what other people are doing you 05:57 know that's awesome I mean your your 06:00 spend out so much wisdom right now I'm 06:02 gonna try not try to minimize how much I 06:04 piggyback on that because there was a 06:06 lot there but you know being in starting 06:09 a brand ascent media obviously a media 06:12 marketing company you know so many 06:14 people think they're doing good and they 06:17 don't have to do anything but that's the 06:19 time you got to you gotta you have to 06:21 invest you your and I can tell you're 06:23 you're thinking outside of the box 06:26 get blockbuster look at Sears look at so 06:28 many people that were or so many 06:30 companies that we're doing amazing and 06:31 what did they do they never changed 06:33 exactly and as opposed to Netflix which 06:37 completely and so the thing about it is 06:41 you got you know Netflix should have 06:44 been invented by Blockbuster you know 06:47 Airbnb should have been invented by 06:50 Hilton you know these companies that get 06:53 complacent and they're not growing and 06:55 they're not evolving and you get a 06:57 company like wish that comes along which 06:59 a lot of people haven't even heard of 07:01 but wish started 100% marketing online 07:05 Facebook Instagram they went from zero 07:08 to turning down a ten billion dollar 07:11 cash offer from Amazon in three years 07:13 ten billion dollars so most people a lot 07:18 of people haven't heard of wish yet 07:20 they're doing eight and a half billion a 07:21 year okay so that's a great example 07:28 actually but but I love how you're 07:31 reinventing yourself I love how you're 07:33 open minded to marketing and here's the 07:34 other thing you're you're making a 07:37 barrier to entry you're lowering the 07:41 barrier to entry if people want to use 07:43 your product or service you're making it 07:45 easier for them to be able to do that 07:47 and that's awesome and you're making a 07:49 convenient you're making it fun I mean 07:50 you can drink on the way to the the 07:53 go-karting I mean that's called win okay 07:57 not on the way after so you can talk 08:02 trash to each other while you're 08:04 powering down viewers okay and you can 08:05 drink while axe-throwing now you can't 08:08 drink well really long as you sign the 08:12 waiver never ever neglect your employees 08:21 because some your employees will give 08:24 you some of the best ideas mm-hmm so 08:26 because they're the ones who deal with 08:28 the customers the most and they you know 08:30 we have we usually try to have babies 08:32 once a month and we do outings 08:34 we just went to Alamo Drafthouse what 08:36 but before we do that I like to talk 08:38 with everybody as a group and so on 08:40 they'll come up with great ideas I 08:42 didn't think about so don't neglect any 08:45 employee that let them and also improves 08:49 their morale so much because hey that 08:51 was my idea 08:52 right so listen to your employees you 08:53 always learnt so much it'll help your 08:55 business I definitely agree reminds me 08:57 about reading something a while back 08:59 about Bill Gates when he goes on 09:00 vacation he have he invites everybody to 09:04 write a letter about an improvement to 09:06 make in the company and Bill Gates on 09:08 vacation literally reading letters from 09:10 every employees all of the Microsoft 09:12 employees back then so I thought that 09:15 was really really pretty awesome because 09:16 he wanted to your point he wanted to 09:19 know this from my my memory here which 09:22 is not spectacular but he wanted to know 09:25 what the janitor thought about X and you 09:29 know that's a you know you can't be 09:31 everywhere at all time but you're good 09:32 people can you know so definitely thank 09:36 you for sharing that that was great 09:37 content and moving over to Josh how long 09:40 you been with American Red Cross ten 09:44 years okay goes by quick doesn't it okay 09:48 awesome 09:49 you know we measure things by okay a lot 09:58 of people sure and gosh we've certainly 10:03 needed some help over the last decade 10:05 for sure with the floods and hurricanes 10:06 on the the eastern Outer Banks and all 10:10 of that and tell us a little bit about 10:12 yourself where you're from originally 10:16 the DC Maryland area okay I came down 10:19 for college in Eastern North Carolina 10:21 North Carolina Wesleyan College Division 10:23 three okay a lot of great for the love 10:27 of the game athletes down there there 10:29 you go but came down for for college 10:31 there fell in love with the state you 10:33 know I met my wife and fell in love with 10:35 I was working nonprofit and a non-profit 10:37 there and fell in love with the mission 10:39 of the Red Cross been in the military 10:41 and served in the military and 10:43 interacted with them in different ways 10:44 okay so what branch were you in I was in 10:53 New York okay I'm not gonna hold that 10:56 against you Thanks I was in the 82nd so 10:59 I would bring it up but yeah so to what 11:02 brought me to North Carolina but you 11:04 just love the field and just enjoy 11:06 serving other people I'm guessing we 11:14 can't we can't do things the way we were 11:16 doing 150 years ago sure the nature of 11:20 disasters man-made natural it has 11:22 changed the technology partners have 11:26 made things we can do a better job being 11:29 humanitarians and serving serving the 11:32 community so the Red Cross is big 11:35 one of the biggest nonprofits out there 11:36 but we still have a very very local 11:39 touch to all of our communities offices 11:42 all throughout the country really so so 11:46 we're big and we have we have a 11:47 corporate corporate footprint and we we 11:50 follow we use a lot of the same tools a 11:52 lot of corporate sales teams use and 11:54 things like that but we also have a 11:56 great mission that keeps us grounded to 12:01 super when you talk about manmade 12:04 disasters you're not talking about like 12:05 Cam Newton's wardrobe right you're 12:07 actually talking about some some 12:09 different things but to each his own I 12:18 don't judge so that being said kind of 12:22 the purpose in the collaboration and 12:24 Scott obviously old friend of the family 12:26 here tell us a little bit about yourself 12:28 real quick just I'm 12:29 assuming everybody knows but they may 12:30 not have seen the other podcast sure 12:32 sure so networking this one that you see 12:37 you kicked my song he's gonna be serious 12:39 if he just actually served as a freshman 12:41 no you're saying is pre rated for life 12:44 awesome but yeah I mean the 12:47 collaboration I mean Adam and I have 12:48 known each other for a very long time 12:50 it's very influential in the community 12:52 and you know when I thought of where we 12:54 were gonna host ear you know I 12:56 immediately thought about him and you 12:57 know we've had a lot of success with one 12:59 another and I just admire where he comes 13:01 from you know he's very passionate about 13:02 giving back to community and that's also 13:04 something we try and incorporate you 13:06 know to deliver a superior networking 13:08 experience support local businesses and 13:10 also make it about to give back to the 13:12 community so and there's no bigger 13:14 advocate of the American Red Cross and 13:18 what the Red Cross is the they are the 13:21 first people out of their disaster 13:23 before disaster happens they're out 13:25 there preparing and just what they do is 13:27 just amazing and so I love to give 13:30 everything I can to help the Red Cross 13:31 will that doubt and that's awesome and 13:33 go ahead opposed it but you know it's 13:36 bitch partnerships community 13:37 partnerships with the local church with 13:39 local business with local community 13:42 leaders this is this is how we get out 13:45 in front you know we talk about you know 13:47 business business you know leadership 13:50 advice and things like that it's so 13:53 important to be as leaders as 13:55 organizations what I call a learning 13:58 leader right so so the Red Cross is 14:01 constantly doing that every time we go 14:03 through something like we just went 14:05 through that's the last 15 days with 14:07 Dorian we're learning the lessons we've 14:09 learned from Florence we put in the soma 14:12 in action with the with Dorian ahead of 14:16 time and Adams right where we're out 14:17 there beforehand on preparedness is a 14:19 big thing it's amazing how many of our 14:21 partners Fire Chiefs emergency managers 14:23 will say you know what we spend millions 14:26 of dollars on equipment but the Red 14:28 Cross and the work you do and 14:30 preparedness can save money property 14:34 line 14:34 in an equal or greater fashion just 14:38 because you're out in front we proactive 14:40 instead of reactive right you know which 14:42 is awesome in a couple things before we 14:43 get away from that I think it's really 14:45 smart on a networking point of view as a 14:48 business owner that I'm always kind of 14:50 baffled that more businesses don't host 14:53 things like this or host a networking 14:56 event or host an opportunity to have a 14:59 blood drive or whatever you want to say 15:01 number one I think it's a good thing for 15:04 a business to do to serve your community 15:06 especially when you're pulling a profit 15:08 out of the community and I just think 15:12 that's really smart business number one 15:14 but then of course it's the the good 15:16 side of you as well you want to serve 15:17 your community so I think that's awesome 15:27 carve into a manager he's got the 15:31 mentality of we gotta make me you know 15:36 we got to make a penny from everybody 15:37 you you nickel and dime and everybody 15:40 you know if somebody grabbed these 15:46 dollars you know we have 200 people 15:48 there and one person took a bottle of 15:50 water I'm not worried about to y'all 15:51 sure so the way a prong explained to it 15:54 to him is don't nickel and dime people 15:58 give out freebies you want it's so much 16:01 more important to develop a relationship 16:03 so this company comes back in wearing 16:06 about two dollars and disappointing you 16:08 and I think a lot of business owners 16:10 have that same mentality so a lot of 16:12 thing a lot of business owners have that 16:13 same mentality we've got to make money 16:16 on every single thing I disagree 16:18 completely I think if you if you give 16:20 give give you'll get back two three 16:24 times for sure so gifts especially given 16:27 to the community because people remember 16:28 that and they'll come back and you get 16:30 publicity out of it anything else you 16:32 get free publicity PR is so much better 16:35 than advertisement by all means so don't 16:37 worry about nickel and dime and worry 16:39 about giving people a good time and 16:41 you're gonna see them come back and 16:43 you're gonna see even more in value you 16:45 want to give people value yeah 16:48 yeah I mean it's definitely a balance I 16:50 mean you got to make money you guys got 16:52 to pay the bills and take care of 16:53 employees and plan for the future and 16:55 get ready for the next recession because 16:57 it will come and we got to be saving for 16:59 that and planning for that but it is a 17:02 balance you want to serve your customers 17:04 and B value orientated for sure and so 17:09 part of the reason why we're here today 17:10 is to talk about an upcoming upcoming 17:13 collaboration with you guys and who 17:15 wants to take the lead on start and 17:18 starting that off you know just we 17:40 decided just how we can serve and you 17:45 know bring you guys value so we have an 17:49 event that's coming up next Tuesday 17:50 September 17th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and 17:53 out of the generosity of Adam of a 17:56 percent of the revenue generated Oh Adam 17:59 talked about that piece but I personally 18:01 want to make a hundred other donation 18:02 which would you have a landing page set 18:04 up so nice following this on behalf of 18:07 myself firstly in sphere we're going to 18:08 go ahead and keep that campaign off and 18:10 what's the goal how much money were 18:12 looking at a razor 18:13 well my actual goal was gonna be 15 18:16 million dollars so anything close to 18:19 that I'll be happy mmmm-mmm 18:21 Scott is an amazing networker he is a 18:24 personable person if I've ever seen 18:27 everybody the community you know Scott 18:29 so when we first started doing these 18:31 networking events you know I've hosted 18:33 many networking events usually at 20 or 18:35 30 people yeah over-under people come 18:37 small business owners people the 18:39 community sure so he's got a great great 18:42 way of bringing people together and they 18:45 almost lie on you know people exaggerate 18:49 a little bit but no Scott really knows a 18:51 lot of people and these business owners 18:54 are they're happy to network with each 18:57 other but on top of that from what I saw 19:00 they did not mind me they were happy to 19:02 pay extra to donate to the Red Cross 19:05 sure so that's happened last time so I'm 19:07 gonna do the same thing and we're still 19:09 going to give discounts so that we can 19:11 get give them a good value for the money 19:13 but we're donating a hundred percent of 19:15 everything that comes in that day 19:17 directly to the Red Cross 19:19 okay well that's awesome so it's the 19:22 more people that come the merrier so 19:25 obviously people out on the coast with 19:27 all these hurricanes here lately you 19:28 know there's a lot of needs there's not 19:30 a help that is needed and this is where 19:32 the American Red Cross comes in and 19:35 sounds like a great time yeah you know 19:38 it's one of those things where we go we 19:41 talked about partnerships earlier 19:43 networking the Red Cross having someone 19:46 like Adam Russia recording that has come 19:49 up time and time again this is not the 19:51 first time like you mentioned that they 19:53 have stepped up to help the people the 19:55 communities in Eastern North Carolina so 20:00 we're getting together it's gonna be a 20:01 lot of fun oh yeah a ton of fun it 20:04 really is a lot of time yeah and it 20:06 really it's it's it's it's fun for a 20:09 great cause you know this the Red Cross 20:12 we're so we try to be so diligent when 20:15 it comes to community support and you 20:17 see a lot of nonprofits you go to places 20:19 like guy at Starcom and you see some 20:21 nonprofits out there that spend a lot of 20:24 money on the administrative 20:25 administrative and we are so focused 20:27 that we we spend ninety cents out of 20:30 every dollar goes right to serve in the 20:33 community and ten cents goes to making 20:36 sure that we have the administrative 20:38 whatever you have to do that is gonna 20:40 pay people and structures right so so 20:43 we're very but having a partner like 20:44 this to come out and engage people a lot 20:47 of people sat there and we've seen a lot 20:49 of comparisons to well you know this 20:51 this wasn't Florence but you got to stop 20:54 and think you know to the to the 20:56 thousands of people who spent last 20:58 weekend in a shelter and some of them 21:00 still have tarps on their roof from 21:02 course some of them of year ago today is 21:04 the one-year anniversary of the landfall 21:07 of Hurricane 21:08 jeez some of them spent spent almost a 21:10 year ago spent nights and Red Cross 21:12 shelters and that takes that takes a lot 21:15 of funds to be able to get out to have 21:17 these shelters operational and so having 21:20 folks who come in and help us help us 21:22 raise this raise the funding to be out 21:24 there beforehand sure to help respond 21:26 and help do long-term recovery because 21:28 we've been with these with thousands 21:30 over over six up it's over sixty six 21:33 hundred families were impacted we're 21:37 still doing Lord's work with them Wow 21:39 and so we were there for McGann with 21:42 Dorian and these you know our 21:43 organization is volunteer led volunteer 21:46 volunteer called out yeah caroling out 21:49 everywhere doing great things people 21:51 came from all over the country from 21:52 Florence and they did the same thing for 21:54 Dorian so local volunteers from from 21:58 here will be coming out helping us with 22:00 this event helping us do what we need to 22:02 do here as well but we're volunteer-led 22:04 and that helps us state again we won't 22:07 talk about being connected to a 22:08 community when they're coming are part 22:10 of us and our integral part of who we 22:12 are so we have this event it's going to 22:14 be a ton of fun we have the opportunity 22:16 to to raise funds to support the victims 22:20 of Hurricane Dorian and some people said 22:23 well this wasn't Florence but again 22:25 there are people who lost their own 22:26 people in Emerald Isle lowkick Rhode 22:28 Island 22:29 we're still doing a lot of work there 22:30 this week was really the big week for us 22:32 because we had to get on a ferry get all 22:35 of our stuff on a ferry to drop to Erica 22:36 crook and so we a lot of that work 22:39 started they were people they were 22:41 taking people off helicopters and 22:43 bringing them to us and now we get to go 22:44 onto the island starting Sunday Sunday 22:47 afternoon so a lot of great work has 22:49 been going on there as well but this is 22:52 going to be money raised to help support 22:54 them help them get what they need and so 22:56 we're very appreciative Adam rushing our 22:58 card it's time and time again to have 23:00 that partnership it's a big deal 23:01 definitely and great networking if 23:03 you're a small business owner or a large 23:04 business owner you get out and meet 23:05 people you know I say all the time it's 23:08 not about it's not about who you know 23:10 it's who knows you and to do that you 23:13 got to have relationships and with 23:15 purpose network with purpose and if I'm 23:18 not mistaken the axe-throwing 23:20 going on that day you get to throw an 23:22 accent it's got one time for coming out 23:28 oh thank you for the correction that's 23:33 what I meant yeah but it's good practice 23:35 good times and so that leads us to our 23:38 five things and ultimately the five 23:40 things that the five lines of service is 23:43 not used right that's you so the five 23:46 things that I normally talk about is 23:49 actually the five lines of service at 23:51 the Red Cross offers so love to hear 23:52 about those five things yes so you know 23:55 when we first met you know Brian that 23:57 you know people often think about what 24:00 we call blood and flood so what the Red 24:03 Cross actually does a lot of different 24:05 things when we focus on five key areas 24:07 and the American Red Cross and there are 24:09 there are over a hundred and fifty Red 24:12 Cross societies out there in other 24:14 countries okay we're partnering with the 24:16 Bahamas Red Cross right now for the 24:17 impact that they do not sure insolvent 24:19 Dorian but with the American Red Cross 24:21 we focus on five things first of all 24:23 we're responsible for 40% of the 24:26 nation's blood supply so blood is not 24:30 one of those things that you can go and 24:31 artificially manufacture right so it 24:34 takes these same partnerships we're 24:35 talking about to go out and get the 24:38 community engaged people to donate blood 24:40 and the Red Cross does all the testing 24:42 with deputy a regulated so we go through 24:45 all that work of labs you should see 24:47 some more facilities where where this is 24:49 like you know it's it's it's like a 24:51 medical environment but that's to make 24:53 sure that the nation has a safe supply 24:56 of blood product when you need it so 40% 24:59 and I think I take a Dorian the impact 25:02 the Dorian it canceled a hundred blood 25:04 drives which is you know the hospital's 25:06 still needed people are still going on 25:08 hospital patients still need it so 25:10 actually one of the things that Adam has 25:12 been generous enough to do is you know 25:15 so where our office in Raleigh is often 25:17 100 North pear tree lane right across 25:20 from Wakeman so we have blood drives 25:23 there you get a red cross.org and 25:25 scheduled blood drive and if you 25:26 schedule a blood drive and 25:28 our rally office 100 North Pier Tulane 25:32 these things happen multiple times a 25:33 week you go in there and you donate 25:35 blood 25:36 and you ask there the desk ask for Josh 25:38 Cain Animas adam has donated a free cart 25:41 ride for the first 25 people who do that 25:44 so just awesome you got a Red Cross that 25:46 organ get on the schedule it's pretty 25:48 organized and then just let me know 25:50 reach out I'll come down and get you 25:51 this rate this great connection with 25:53 cording and you cannot volunteer you're 25:56 your ex to do this you have to actually 25:59 do it and all the requirements are on 26:03 the web Red Cross by the word you can 26:04 get all the stuff to see if you're 26:05 eligible right but I tell you what if 26:07 you can't give yourself it's a good 26:09 point to say if you can't give yourself 26:10 bring somebody else in and we'll honor 26:12 that too sure so recruit yeah that's 26:16 right network recruiters have now so we 26:18 do blood supply that's one of the 26:20 biggest things that we're known for and 26:21 it's an important job it's important 26:23 responsibility doctor how big the 26:24 organization is but we have a big job 26:27 big jobs and big commitments to the 26:29 American people sure 26:30 the second thing is is our disaster 26:33 response so the media really gets 26:36 involved when things like dorian 26:38 happened and you can't click on a web 26:40 link without seeing the the eye of the 26:41 storm and the track and i didn't make 26:43 sure the reality for us though is we're 26:45 going to be there but we're there 360 26:48 365 24/7 when people experience the same 26:52 impact of a disaster where the whole 26:54 fire campaign these things are happening 26:58 in Eastern North Carolina at an average 27:00 rate to their late night so we do a lot 27:03 of work we do a lot of work to try to 27:05 install smoke alarms and try to save 27:07 lives because we're such a big 27:09 organization we have an opportunity make 27:11 a big impact and we've made a commitment 27:13 that we wanted to reduce the number of 27:15 deaths and home fires by 20 percent over 27:18 over 10 years and we're doing that by 27:21 installing working smoke alarms and airy 27:23 people and you're not plugging the 27:26 iWatch security monitored smoke security 27:29 systems that integrate with your alarm 27:32 system but there's it's it's a it's just 27:35 a solution that's all I'm saying 27:36 potential solutions 27:38 sure making sure people understand what 27:41 resources they have minimum noise you 27:43 guys man mm noise yeah for sure we 27:45 always talk about here the people where 27:46 you sleep so you want to be we want to 27:48 be out there educating people because 27:50 that's those save lives and house fires 27:53 are devastating they just it takes 27:55 everything don't you know you're sitting 27:57 out there in your underwear 3:00 in the 27:58 morning and everything's gone I mean 28:00 that's we can kind of joke about it but 28:01 it's it's devastating when it happens 28:03 you know it doesn't get the media 28:07 attention to Doreen does or Florence 28:09 when you've lost your entire home yeah 28:11 and maybe even a family member it's the 28:13 exact same shirt absolutely see you know 28:16 the fire department were the first call 28:17 the Red Cross is the first call when the 28:19 fire comes out and there's when a family 28:20 needs something okay so we're there 28:22 volunteers right here in the middle of 28:23 night I didn't realize that that's good 28:25 to know we have volunteers who go out 28:26 the building become disaster action team 28:28 members okay the third thing we do which 28:30 is near dear to my heart because what we 28:31 talked about earlier is our work with 28:33 the Armed Forces and veterans okay I 28:35 remember when I first went to our army 28:37 boot camp they said you got they lined 28:40 us up back in the day in front of pay 28:41 phones believe it or not I remember 28:44 those yeah and you're sitting there 28:45 stressed out you know they're getting 28:46 screamed out and they said you know and 28:48 we a giftcard 17 digit gift cards in 28:51 their hands making and they said call 28:53 your mom and dad yeah 30 seconds tell 28:56 them you made it and if there's an 28:58 emergency call the Red Cross you 29:00 remember it maybe remember that from the 29:02 from your own experience but they call 29:04 the Red Cross and so the Red Cross is 29:07 there with the military from the day 29:09 they raise their hand and take an oath 29:11 til til they're getting care and veteran 29:14 in VA facilities as well so we do a ton 29:16 of stuff for military children military 29:19 spouses connecting them when they're 29:21 overseas my brother actually wear this 29:22 as I I support someone serving and it 29:25 has the phone number for how you can 29:27 connect with the Red Cross during 29:28 emergency my brother's in Iraq right now 29:30 he's been there for five months and it's 29:32 a big piece of mind for our family to 29:34 know you know if something happens and 29:36 he needs to get back quickly we can call 29:38 the Red Cross sure an emergency the 29:41 fourth thing we do is making sure that 29:44 people are prepared for the emergency 29:48 a choking hazard CPR AED 29:53 those are big deals right those are big 29:55 deals and you go around you're in a 29:57 restaurant and you see you hear the 29:58 commotion or you know you pediatric CPR 30:02 and people just don't know what to do 30:03 yeah you know all these settings where 30:05 there's restaurants going on and people 30:07 are choking an elderly person to having 30:09 a cardiac event do you know what to do 30:11 if there's an a deal could you save a 30:13 life and we honor a lot of people this 30:15 last year we honored over 400 people who 30:17 were recognized having taken Red Cross 30:19 training in CPR and and have saved a 30:24 life with CPR when no one else in the 30:26 room knew what to do Wow nice yeah and 30:29 the fifth thing we do is we do a lot of 30:31 work with the international community 30:32 helping people connect a lot of people 30:35 right now we have a shelter in the 30:37 Bahamas or in the West Palm Beach for 30:39 people who came for the Bahamas when 30:41 communication goes down in another 30:44 country if they were war torn or if 30:46 there's a natural disaster the Red Cross 30:48 helps people here connect family members 30:51 we call restoring family links so so 30:54 those are the big five blood the flood 30:57 and when it comes to the military 30:58 especially we are there you talk to 31:01 anybody's be served in the military they 31:02 have a Red Cross story awesome well 31:04 we're all looking forward to the event 31:06 on the 17th and thanks for sharing today 31:09 guys and looking forward to this event 31:11 and thanks for the the business wisdom 31:14 as well for our young hustlers out there 31:16 trying to make trying to make it
